Syria: Turkish authorities continue to facilitate flow of terrorists and arms to Syria

    December 6, 2013

    Damascus, (SANA)

Foreign and Expatriates Ministry denounced as ‘reprehensible’ the ongoing Turkish authorities’ involvement in supporting the armed terrorist groups in Syria.

In two identical letters addressed to the UN Secretary-General and President of the United Nations Security Council, the ministry said the Turkish government continues, according to confirmed and documented reports, to offer training and logistical support to the armed terrorist groups.

The Turkish authorities are still providing terrorists with safe havens and facilitating the flow of terrorists and arms into Syria which, the letters said ”constitutes a flagrant violation of the international legitimacy resolutions, including the UNSC resolution No. 1373.”

The ministry cited several border crossings that the Turkish authorities are facilitating the passage of terrorists and arms through, including Bab al-Hawa, al-Fawz, Ein al-Bayda, Kherbet al-Jouz, al-Rihanieh, Ghazaleh, Tal al-Dahab and Atma.

The ministry said that the terrorist attacks stopped at nothing, targeting hospitals, educational institutions, worshiping places and diplomatic missions’ headquarters, not sparing even children in their schools and school buses.

The Foreign Ministry urged the international community to assume its responsibilities and undertake prompt measures according to the powers vested in it to combat terrorism targeting the Syrian people and state.

EU counterterrorism chief warns number of fighters returning from Syria to Europe is on the rise

    Dec 6, 2013

Moscow, (SANA)- EU Counterterrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove reiterated warning of the increasing number of “jihadist fighters” returning back from Syria to Europe.

Kerchove said the scores of those “fighters” have learned how to fight in Syria, which would pose a real threat to Europe, as reported by Russia Today website.

“The number of those coming from and leaving to Syria is on the rise, which entails a firm position to halt that,” the EU official said in a memorandum that will be put forth to a meeting of Interior ministers of the EU countries due on Friday.

He cautioned that such “fighters” are often held as “heroes” by a category of European youths, which increases the chances of those youths following the same path.

The memorandum calls for increasing control at airports to monitor the movements of those “fighters” to and from Syria.

It revealed that there the number of “fighters” ranges from 1200 to 1700 from 11 European countries, contrary to previous estimates which put those at 600-800 last spring, which shows a steady increase in the number of those people.

The memorandum also provided for bolstering cooperation between the EU and Turkey to impose further control on the Turkish-Syrian borders and the paths used by the “fighters” to enter Syria, in addition to controlling airports, flights and the camps of the displaced Syrians in Turkey.
